Every year the United Kingdom holds a Dementia Awareness Week and this year’s starts on May 14th. The Dementia Awareness Week has spread from the UK to across the world in hopes to spread dementia awareness and support.

Dementia AwarenessDuring this week, the UK urges residents to unite and come together against dementia by spreading awareness. The event is held by the Alzheimer’s Society, which is a charity that offers dementia research and support to patients and their families. Over 800,000 people have dementia in the UK alone and many do not even know it. Dementia is starting to be considered the top killer in the 21st century because it is growing at an alarming rate.

A lot of people don’t even know they have dementia. The week promotes awareness so people can be diagnosed at an earlier rate and help them as dementia progresses. In Arizona, SMART Brain Aging can offer help with their clinics and Brain U Online program.

First, we must understand dementia and the early warning signs that comes with it. The World Health Organization describes dementia as a syndrome where there is deterioration in memory, thinking, behavior and the ability to perform everyday activities. Memory loss is the most common sign. If you start forgetting newly learned information or if you have complications performing familiar tasks, like driving to a location that you usually drive to, you might be experiencing early signs of dementia. Other signs include misplacing things and putting them in odd locations. Some people even start to withdrawal from social activities and hobbies.

The Alzheimer’s Association has a helpful list of other signs to look out for. Symptoms progress at different rates for everyone, but people can live a full and happy life, even with just a little bit of assistance.Dementia Awareness

People are more than just dementia. Sometimes it gets so bad that patients are unable to communicate. So ever year there is a theme during Dementia Awareness Week. Remember the Person is designed to remember the person behind dementia. Offering support and care for those suffering with dementia is important. It isn’t an easy thing to go through, but there are resources that can help. This week promotes those resources and helps the public understand dementia.

Many fundraising events around the UK will take place and there are even some that will take place across the world. This is a great time to raise awareness and also to raise money for the patients and families affected by dementia. Anyone can help by giving information, advice or just by showing support.

Also kicking off this week is the Dementia Society’s Step2Raise. Join Team Brain U today! And stay tuned for more information!
