There are hundreds of gems to choose from in today's jewellery market. Some of Genuine Gemstones for Sale may suit you in colour, others in shape. But what characterizes and distinguishes them most from each other is whether they are precious or semi-precious, minerals and crystals.

African-Amethyst

We will focus on the first two species and what sets them apart. Real gemstones for sale is, by definition, a mineral, rock, or fossil that, after being cut, veneered or polished, can be used in jewellery as well as in collecting.

Surprisingly, the identification of the gems as such was based on a tradition that originated in the West. Precious are those that have been most rarely encountered, namely: Natural Diamond, ruby, sapphire and emerald. So, geographically justified, the division of major and minor stones begins.

However, each of the four gems brings a different added value that makes it even more exclusive and even more luxurious.  For example, the most valuable in diamonds is the clear colourless diamond, while in ruby; its leading colour is pink. This is due to the fact that stone is a type of corundum mineral.

A similar quality applies to sapphire - its characteristic blue colour is of paramount importance to collectors, and to emeralds the deep green hue brought to it as a kind of beryl mineral.

As you might guess, we will be introducing you to each and every Precious Gemstones separately, but until then, let's summarize the most important things.

  • Hardness, colour, size, mass (carat), cleanliness, origin, absence of defects and processing - these are the main characteristics of Semi Precious Stones For Sale.

  • When it comes to hardness, diamond is the first in the ranking. It is the most valuable gem because it has the hardest mineral structure of carbon.

  • The colour or lack thereof is another major characteristic of diamond, ruby, sapphire and emerald. They are estimated on the basis of colour scales.

  • Size is the next factor that determines the value of the gems. It is due to their formation in the earth's crust and conditions such as pressure and depth of its location.

  • The mass, also known as carat, is a unit of precious stones equal to 0.2 grams. The larger the carat, the bigger and less common the stone.

  • Purity, also known as "transparency", is a characteristic that determines the clarity in the structure of stones, whether precious or not. Good transparency is a sign of greater beauty of the stone, which is highly valued in jewellery.

  • Lack of defects and processing (grinding) are also determining the value of gemstones. There are four main types of grinding of gemstones: brilliant, rosette, stepped and cuneiform.

  • And last but not least - every gem must be accompanied by a certificate of origin.

And so, apart from popular opinion, not every Blue Semi Precious Stones of good quality can be called precious. And you are expecting to be introduced to each of the gems individually soon and to guide you on how to distinguish them from one another.
